Making Internships Matter: Learning by Doing

Making Internships Matter: Learning by Doing

September 1, 2025

Dear Reader,

I had the opportunity to complete a two-month internship at AWITE GmbH in Germany as part of the AMBER project and to gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of renewable energy.

As a student pursuing a combined degree in Renewable Energy Engineering Systems and Sustainable Energy Management, this internship allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. In this article, I would like to share a brief overview of the tasks I undertook and the knowledge I gained during that time.

AWITE GmbH specializes in providing both stationary and mobile gas analyzers, as well as laboratory digesters under the brand name awiLAB. In the first days of my internship, I worked on measuring the uncertainties of awi2Go, a mobile analyzer available in three versions-awi2Go S, awi2Go M, and awi2Go L-which differ in the number of analyzers they include.

Later on, I turned to the management side of my studies by exploring ISO 14001:2015. I analyzed the environmental management standard and outlined the core requirements needed for its implementation within an organization.

In addition to this, I had the chance to assemble one of the stationary analyzers, and I contributed to the production process by assembling electrochemical and infrared sensors. This included tasks such as firmware installation and calibration. These hands-on activities strengthened my understanding of electronics and expanded my practical skills.

The experience was further enriched by a visit to operational biogas plants, where I observed the complete process – from feedstock input to electricity generation. This provided a deeper understanding of how renewable energy systems work in practice and how different components come together to produce sustainable energy.

Acknowledgments
I am deeply thankful to the AWITE family for welcoming me as one of their own and would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Abdelghani El Asli and Mr. Rachid Lghoul for providing me with this valuable opportunity. I am also deeply thankful to Ms. Elena Hofer for her guidance and mentorship throughout my journey.
